My Political "Career" is Over!

Hi Everyone - Sorry its been such a long time since I posted.

As the Federal candidate for Family First for the Electorate of Makin (SA) it has been a tumultuous 10 months (particularly the last 3 months) but with the close of polls on November 24, 2007 my foray into the political arena came to a end.

Whilst it was hard work and at times very frustrating due to a complete media "white-out" in relation to Family First, I really enjoyed the cut and thrust of the political process, working with a committed team and meeting some wonderful people within the Makin electorate and beyond.

Change is inevitable (along with death and taxes :-)) but if you don't like the way things are changing then you need to make a decision. Am I going to suffer (often in silence) or am I going to be an agent for change and get involved in the process? To this end, I applaud all of those people who are actively involved in their communities with the aim of bringing about change for the better - and often at great personal sacrifice.

This is the essence of leadership! Leadership is not what is done by why it is done. The why gets to the underlying motivation. Leadership cannot be put on and taken off like a piece of clothing. It is either present or it isn't. We will have to wait and see how this pans out in the current political landscape.

And what about leaders? What is a leader? A leader is someone who forges new paths - a trail blazer. When we think of the current election we are aware of Labor's platform of "New Leadership". However, a real leader will be will be evidenced by the new ground that is broken, the new paths that are forged and the old and possibly new problems that are solved. All of this remains to be seen.

In fact, the term "New Leadership" is really a misnomer. Leadership is neither new nor old, good nor bad - it stands on its own merits as an unshakable personal characterstic. To this end, not all leaders engage in leadership and certainly not all those who exhibit leadership have the label of leader. A leader can be devoid of leadership qualities and values and the political arena is probably one of the best environments to test and observe these things in action.

Leadership is inextricably linked to values - wholesome values. There are many kinds of leaders but only one kind of leadership - just like there is only one kind of honesty and one kind of integrity.

Leadership distills down to creativity - new opportunities, new systems, new procedures, new awareness, new understanding. This takes courage - it involves boldness and daring! And out of this comes change - for the better.

This is why we need to get involved.
